Nov. 13: Green practices symposium offered for small businesses
Learn practical approaches to going green that can save your small business money and resources while also building a reputation for environmental concern at a special workshop being held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13 at the University Center of Lake County, 1200 University Center Drive on the College of Lake County Grayslake campus. “Saving Money and Resources Through Green Practices, A Small Business Symposium” is being presented by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County, Lake County Partners and the Lake County Workforce Investment Board.
Michelle Sheldon of Eco Marketing Services / Eco Promotional Products, Inc., will give a keynote presentation called “Blending Smart Business Decisions with Green Values.” The keynote presentation will begin at 9 a.m., followed by panel discussions of experts speaking about such topics as energy rebate programs, waste management strategies, cost-saving energy audits and how to promote your green practices using marketing and public relations approaches. The program will include time to network with presenters, and each attendee will receive a flash drive with resource information.

From 9:35-10:35 a.m. a panel discussion called “Going Green: Energy Audits, Rebates and Alternatives” will feature Tadd Scarpelli, Energy Technologies and Auditing; Erinn Monroe, Commonwealth Edison Incentive Programs and Services; and Donald Fournier, Smart Energy Design Assistance Center/senior researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Architecture’s Building Research Council.
From 10:45-11:45 there will be a second panel discussion called “Going Green: Doing Good, Saving Money and Earning Good PR.” The participants are Walter Willis, SWALCO Waste Reduction; John Harris, a5 consulting company and David Kaplan, Maine Plastics. The workshop concludes with an introduction of the College of Lake County’s new Sustainability Center and information about Opportunities for Green Business Development Assistance through the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the college.
